Ming Chen, Ph.D., joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry as an associate professor of organic chemistry in August 2023.
Chen conducted his Ph.D. studies at the Scripps Research Institute under the supervision of Professor William R. Roush, working on boron chemistry and natural product synthesis. After earning his Ph.D., he moved to the University of California, Berkeley and conducted his postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Professor John F. Hartwig. There he worked on method development for Ir-catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitution reactions.
He started his independent career in 2016 at Auburn University before arriving at Virginia Tech. His research at Virginia Tech focuses on asymmetric catalysis with transition metal complexes toward the development of pharmaceuticals.
