American Chemical Society Student Affiliates (ACSSA)

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the premier organization for chemistry professionals. ACS Student Affiliates chapters are organizations for undergraduate students with an interest in the chemical sciences. Student affiliation with the ACS allows opportunities to network with top professionals, attend scientific meetings, receive the ACS Student Member Magazine, inChemistry, use ACS career and employment services, and access the Directory of Experiential Opportunities that lists co-ops, internships and summer jobs for undergraduate chemistry students.

Alpha Chi Sigma

Alpha Chi Sigma is a national, co-ed, professional chemistry fraternity that values brotherhood, service, academics and professional development through chemistry. Notable brothers include Gilbert Newton Lewis, Peter J.W. Debye, Willard H. Dow, Carl "Speed" Marvel, Linus Pauling, Glenn Seaborg, and Bassam Shakhashiri. Its membership includes 20 Nobel Laureates. Virginia Tech is host to the Gamma Iota chapter, which has initiated over 700 members since its founding in 1987.

The members of the Gamma Iota chapter engage in science outreach programs, including setting up refreshments for the Highlands Seminar Series, performing demonstrations for local scouting and student organizations and providing tutoring to undergraduates and high school students. The organization is very active with community service, taking on roles with the Adopt-a-Highway program, annual food drives, volunteering at Warm Hearth Village, as well as Relay for Life and The Big Event.

AXE offers free peer tutoring in the Chemistry Learning Center Davidson Hall 219) for General, Organic, and Analytical Chemistry. AXE hosts rush events for interested students, faculty and community members in the first few weeks of each semester.
