(October 16, 2018) A team led by Prof. Nick Mayhall and including Profs. Sophia Economou and Ed Barnes from the Virginia Tech Department of Physics and David Pappas from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has received a $1.8 million grant from the Department of Energy to perform simulations of molecules on small, custom built superconducting quantum computers. The team will proceed by developing new ways to define the molecular problem, novel mappings to qubit representations, advanced simulation algorithms, and high fidelity quantum hardware for the simulation of small molecules. By carrying out this work, the team hopes to learn more about the potential benefits and challenges near quantum computation may present.
