SAL Facility Overview
The Surface Analysis Lab provides nanoscale measuments of chemical composition and bonding for the top 5-10 nm of solid surfaces through X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Additionally, the Surface Analysis Lab houses instrumentation for Powder X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Emission Spectroscopy, and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure.
Facility Hours & Access
Facility Access
- 24/7 access for trained users with door code
- Door code provided after completing facility training
- After-hours access requires understanding of emergency procedures
Staff Availability
- Staff office hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM
- No drop-ins: Email or call ahead to schedule consultations
- Emergency contact: Use cell phone numbers (emergencies only) if urgent issues arise outside business hours
After-Hours Safety
When working in the facility outside of regular hours:
- Never work alone if handling potentially hazardous samples
- Know the location of emergency exits and safety equipment
- Keep your phone accessible for emergency communication
